Advanced image handling

Our integrated image processing and file format conversion engine provides for automatic photo publishing but also allows control when needed. The content contributor does not need to worry about internet file formats, resolutions, etc.; the raw photo is simply uploaded into the system on its own or part of a bulk photo upload. The image-handling engine provides for independent, rule-based cropping (controlled from the user interface) for the photo on the home page, section front and article.

Automatic cropping can override manual crops but interprets "cropping hints" suggested by the editor so that the main subject matter is preserved. This is particularly useful when the system is automatically creating a photo gallery with each photo having a uniform aspect ratio. The image-handling engine automatically crops images with differing aspect ratios to a consistent aspect ratio.
